Widnes Foodbank is encouraging the local community to support their Christmas food collection at Tesco on Ashley Way, which will be taking place from 28th to 30th November 2024.
The collection will follow a similar format to the event which took place earlier in the summer. The summer collection proved to be a successful event, delivering 1,091.8 kg of food donations and £282.26 in cash.
The Neighbourhood Food Collection events, which are a partnership between Trussell and Tesco, prove to be an essential collection drive for foodbanks nationally. Tesco also donate 20% of the monetary value of the food donated during the event to foodbanks taking part.
How are the collections organised?
These food drives do not happen by themselves, with a team of willing volunteers undertaking a huge amount of planning and organisation taking place behind the scenes.
Rotas are drawn up for the event for volunteers to set up in Tesco before the event and clear up afterwards, greet shoppers in store, sort the donated items, transport the donation from Tesco to our warehouse and receive and store the donations at the warehouse.

The roll pallets were then transported to volunteers’ cars parked outside the entrance and transported to the warehouse. This usually involves several trips during the event.
At the warehouse space is made ready to receive the donations and volunteers begin receiving and storing the donations. Volunteers will then mark all donations with dates so they can be distributed to people in need.
We would like to thank all staff at Tesco who assist us in setting up for the collection. We would also like to thank all volunteers, without them we simply wouldn’t be able to run these food collection events. Are you interested in volunteering with us?
