Project Co-ordinator Vicky shares her story of running a foodbank during the pandemic

Volunteers from Widnes Foodbank collect food

Meet Vicky, the Project co-ordinator for Widnes Foodbank.

What do I do?

In my role I oversee the running of the foodbank, that can be anything from attending voluntary sector meetings, reporting to Trustees, organising stock audits, training and recruitment to being on site and driving.  I love my job, it is flexible, and it is really varied.  I never have two days the same.

Why work for foodbank?

I had been made redundant after 12 years and was taking some time out to focus on my degree when this role was brought to my attention by my local vicar.  In all honesty, I did not know that foodbanks existed or that there was even a need for them.  Then I did my research: I was shocked and horrified at the food poverty statistics,  not just in Widnes but across the UK.  I knew I had to apply.

How have the last two years been?

It has been challenging on many levels.  Rapid changes have had to be made to ensure the safety of clients and all of our volunteers.  Safety measures are constantly under review and operating models assessed as well as ensuring we are fully operational.  Widnes Foodbank is blessed to be surrounded by amazing volunteers and a very supportive community which has enabled Widnes Foodbank to continue serving those in need.

What do I do in my spare time?

With a large family myself, and university I find I don’t have much spare time, but when I do, I run.  You will very often find me with running trainers on and pounding the streets or when it is allowed off on a trail somewhere in the middle of nowhere getting covered in mud and getting lost.
