Volunteering Introduction Pack

Widnes Foodbank volunteers at Tesco collection

Widnes Foodbank is run entirely by volunteers across the town, working in a variety of ways to ensure clients can come to us in times of need.

We are incredibly grateful to anyone who wishes to volunteer with us during the current COVID-19 outbreak but at present we have enough volunteers to maintain safe social distancing.

The vast majority of our operations take place during weekday daytimes – excluding weekends and Bank Holidays when we don’t operate at all.

Occasionally, we may operate outside of these hours – for example our Supermarket collections which usually take place twice a year.

Driving

Undertaking ad-hoc collections (on an “as and when” basis) to transport food to/from collection points, the warehouse, and distribution centres across the town. We’ll be happy to reimburse any reasonable mileage costs that may be incurred as part of the role.

Foodbank Centres

Meeting and greeting clients at one of our centres across town, producing food parcels and listening to (and signposting) clients for further support. Full training will be provided and must be completed before commencing work in a distribution centre. Subject to opening times.

We operate three foodbank centres across the town (click for location details and opening times):

Before commencing work in any of our distribution centres it is essential that all volunteers attend a short training workshop. This is to ensure the safety and integrity of both our volunteers and our service users. Each session at a distribution centre must be operated by a minimum of three volunteers.

Warehouse

Sorting through, weighing and storing donated food, and readying deliveries for distribution centres. It is highly likely that this line of volunteering would require some heavy lifting, however this could be accommodated for volunteers facing difficulties.

Volunteers at the Widnes Foodbank warehouse help to sort, weigh and distribute donated food. The warehouse accepts donations from the public and collection points, and readies deliveries to the foodbank distribution centres around town.
